Mastopexy (Breast Lift)
A woman’s breasts often change over time, losing their youthful shape and firmness. These changes and loss of skin elasticity can result from pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, aging, gravity and heredity.
A breast lift raises and firms the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the new breast contour. Sometimes the areola becomes enlarged over time, and a breast lift will reduce this as well. A breast lift can rejuvenate your figure with a breast profile that is youthful and uplifted.
What It Won’t Do: Breast lift surgery does not significantly change the size of your breasts or round out the upper part of your breast. If you want your breasts to look fuller or smaller, you might want to consider either breast augmentation or breast reduction surgery, both of which are described below.
Breast Augmentation (Saline or Silicone)
If you are dissatisfied with your breast size, augmentation surgery is a choice to consider. Breast augmentation can increase the fullness and projection of your breasts, improve the balance of your figure, and enhance your self-image and self-confidence.
Also known as augmentation mammaplasy, the proceedure involves using implants to fulfill your desire for fuller breasts or to restore breast volume lost after weight reduction or pregnancy. Implants also may be used to reconstruct a breast after mastectomy or injury.
Options for Breast Implants:
What It Won’t Do: Breast augmentation does not correct severely drooping breasts. If you want your breasts to look fuller and to be lifted due to sagging, a breast lift may be required in conjunction with breast augmentation. Breast lifting can often be done at the same time as your augmentation or may require a separate operation. Our plastic surgeon will assist you in making this decision.
Breast Reduction
Women with large breasts experience more than dissatisfaction with their body image. Overly large breasts and the weight of excess breast tissue can cause pain and physical conditions that impair a woman’s ability to lead an active life. Breast reduction is a surgical procedure to reduce the size of large pendulous breasts that are disproportionate to a woman’s body and cause physical pain.
Technically called reduction mammaplasty, breast reduction improves breast size, shape and the associated conditions of large breasts that include:
Breast reduction can be performed unilaterally (on one breast) or bilaterally (on both breasts). It is generally considered a reconstructive procedure and may be covered by health insurance when it is performed to relieve medical symptoms. Often times, pre-certification is required for reimbursement or coverage under health insurance plans, so please consult with your insurance company before proceeding.
Breast ReconstructionBreast reconstruction is a physically and emotionally rewarding procedure for a woman who has lost a breast due to cancer or other condition. The creation of a new breast can dramatically improve your self-image, self-confidence and quality of life.
Breast reconstruction is achieved trough several plastic surgery techniques that attempt to restore a breast to near normal shape, appearance and size following mastectomy. Although surgery can give you a relatively natural-looking breast, a reconstructed breast will never look or feel exactly the same as the breast that was removed.
The decision to have breast reconstruction surgery is extremely personal. You should do it for yourself, not to fulfill someone elses desires or try to fit any sort of ideal image.
Gynecomastia (Male Breast Reduction)
Gynecomastia, a condition of over-developed or enlarged breasts in men, is common in men of any age. It’s estimated that about sixty percent of males worldwide have some degree of gynecomastia.
It can present at an early age or develop later in life and can be the result of hormonal changes, heredity conditions, disease or the use of certain drugs.
Gynecomastia can cause emotional discomfort and impair your self confidence. Some men may even avoid certain physical activities and intimacy simply to hide their condition. Gynecomastia is characterized by:

Options for Breast Implants:
- Saline Implants are filled with sterile salt water. They can be filled with varying amounts of saline which can effect the shape, firmness and feel of the breast. Should the implant shell leak, a saline implant will collapse and the saline will be absorbed and naturally expelled by the body.
- Silicone Implants are filled with an elastic gel. The gel feels and moves much like natural breast tissue. If the implants leaks, the gel may remain within the implant shell, or may escape into the breast implant pocket. A leaking implant filled with silicone gel may not collapse. If you choose these implants, you may need to visit your plastic surgeon regularly to make sure the implants are functioning properly.
